Egypt Welcomes Initial Talks Between Sudanese Belligerents in Jeddah

Egypt welcomes the start of the initial talks between representatives of the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces in Jeddah, said the Egyptian Foreign Ministry on Saturday.

The statement, issued on Saturday, commended Saudi, regional and international efforts to encourage the Sudanese parties to engage in dialogue.

Egypt stated that it hopes that the talks will result in a permanent and comprehensive ceasefire that protects the lives of the Sudanese people and facilitates the delivery of humanitarian aid to those affected.

Saudi Arabia and the United States said the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces began talks on Saturday — the first since the conflict occurred — in Saudi Arabia’s coastal city of Jeddah.

The talks are part of a diplomatic initiative by Saudi Arabia and the U.S. to stop the fighting that has turned Sudan’s capital, Khartoum, and other urban areas into battlefields, and pushed hundreds of thousands from their homes.

Egypt has called for an immediate ceasefire in Sudan and has held discussions with all the international and regional stakeholders to find the means to overcome the crisis there.
